The following reflects university safety protocols effective March 22, 2023.
WashU continues to closely monitor COVID-19 transmission in the community and on campus, including potential return to more restricted guidance based on local conditions.
All employees — whether vaccinated or vaccine exempt — are required to:
- Self-assess for signs or symptoms of illness
- Contact the the Occupational Health Call Center at 314-362-5050 if symptoms are present for evaluation of respiratory illness before coming to work.
Masking
Due to sustained reduced incidence of COVID-19, influenza and respiratory viral illness, WashU Medicine and BJC HealthCare have decided to ease masking requirements on the Medical Campus, including clinical settings and common areas. Effective Wednesday, March 22, masking is situational for employees and optional for patients and visitors/families.
When to wear a mask
Employees will still be required to wear a mask to comply with:
- Transmission-based precautions (i.e., isolation signs, isolation policy)
- Occupational Health COVID requirements (i.e., cleared to work but still symptomatic, on return to work after COVID infection, recent household contact with COVID infection)
- Stated request by patient of clinician/employee providing care
- PPE guidelines for the care of patients who are positive or suspected positive for COVID-19
To reduce transmission of infectious diseases in the workplace, masking will be strongly encouraged and recommended for employees, patients and visitors:
- Showing signs or symptoms of respiratory illness (e.g., fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat)
- With a recent known exposure to someone with a respiratory infection

Events & meetings
Use the largest available space for large gatherings and avoid crowding especially for any activities that are required by work. There are no limits on gathering sizes or provision of food.
- Social events: In-person social events or parties on the Medical Campus and university-sponsored social events off campus are allowed.
- Business meetings: In-person business meetings may continue.
General hygiene
- Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face.
- Cough and sneeze into your elbow.
Enforcement
These public health policies will be strictly enforced. Violations may result in corrective and/or disciplinary action, including suspension or dismissal.
